Sources of Historical Information
An ideal starting-point for original historical records for Teesdale is the Durham
County Records Office. More general information may be found in published books, available
in County Durham Public Libraries. The complete catalogue for books held in Durham County
Council libraries may accessed from the Local History Links page.
The catalogue includes books held in the Bowes Museum Library.
A complete set of the Society's Journals, 1st and 2nd Series is held at Barnard Castle
Public Library, Hall Street.
The Society's Records
The Society has obtained or copied, over the years, many original records relating to
Teesdsale. These are housed for safe-keeping in the Durham County Record Office and
are available for public consultation. The records are included within the Hanby
Holmes catalogue, D/HH/10/17 together with results of research undertaken in the early

Northumberland Records Office (Gosforth Park, Newcastle) holds the
records of the London Lead Company whose headquarters was located in Middleton in Teesdale
from about 1820.
